Taylor Swift has not explicitly named the specific person she is singing about in "Patient Zero," but the primary theories point to her famous exes Matty Healy or Joe Jonas. [1, 2, 3]

Released on 25 September 2026 as a single from Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the track features lyrics directed at an unnamed woman who is currently dating a toxic man. Swift frames herself as the original victim—"patient zero"—who survived the relationship and is now offering a safe haven to the new girlfriend if she gets "sick of him". [1, 2, 3, 4]

The Main Theories

Matty Healy: Swift sings, "If you wanna party with somebody who might know / About the devil on his shoulder under his halo." Listeners quickly noted the callback to her track "I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)" from The Tortured Poets Department, widely believed to be about The 1975 frontman, where she sang, "He had a halo of the highest grade." [1]
Joe Jonas: Other fans connect the song to her friendship with Sophie Turner. Swift famously dated Jonas in 2008, and years later, she supported Turner through her highly publicised 2023 divorce from Jonas, even lending Turner her New York City apartment. [1]

While the actual inspiration remains officially undisclosed, the track serves as an anthem about bonding with another woman over the shared red flags of a mutual ex. [1]
