    Administrator

    Yes, in the U.S., airlines

must provide water (and snacks) to passengers on tarmac delays exceeding two hours, with exceptions only for safety/security, plus working toilets and medical aid; these DOT rules (14 CFR Part 243) apply to U.S. carriers at U.S. airports and aim to ensure passenger welfare during extended ground holds.

Key Requirements for U.S. Carriers (DOT Rules):
    • Within 2 Hours: Adequate food and potable water must be provided.
    • Lavatories: Must remain operable.
    • Medical: Adequate attention must be available if needed.
    • Comfort: A comfortable cabin temperature must be maintained.
    • Notifications: Passengers must be updated on delay status after 30 mins.
    Exceptions:
    • The pilot-in-command can delay food/water service if safety or security (like moving on an active runway) prevents it.
    Beyond U.S. Rules:
    • Rules vary globally; for instance, Canada has similar provisions.
    • While water is often part of standard service, these rules specifically mandate it for delays.
    What to Do:
    • Bring a reusable bottle: Fill it before boarding for use during normal times.
    • Ask: Request water as the two-hour mark approaches, as crew are alerted to provide it.
