The Moon and mars is pockmarked with craters, because the Magnet at the core of the planet [or 'planetoid', as the moon is] has died due to lack of internal heat and the spinning core of the planet has stopped spinning, no longer creating a magnetospheric effect, that repels destructive solar or interstellar events, so meteorites and solar flares hit directly the surface of both planets, not bounced off by the electromagnetic flux, generated by the magneto core.
